What is CDARS?

CDARS®, the Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service®, available through the Reliance Trust Company, is a service with a sophisticated network that places customer deposits with FDIC-insured banks.

Through this network, CD funds are placed in increments of less than $100,000 throughout a network of more than 1,600 banks so that both principal and interest are eligible for complete FDIC protection.

Top of page

How can deposits greater than $100,000 be insured by the FDIC?

In general, the FDIC insures up to $100,000 per customer per financial institution. So, you could run around to many financial institutions to deposit your funds to receive FDIC insurance for all your deposits greater than $100,000. Or, you can place your deposit in CDARS CDs made available through the AARP Financial Savings Center to achieve FDIC insurance on your total deposit in excess of $100,000, up to $5 million. Through CDARS, funds are broken into amounts less than $100,000 and placed with banks that are participants in the CDARS network. Then, those participating banks issue CDs in the amounts under $100,000, so that your entire principal deposit and interest are eligible for FDIC insurance. Through CDARS, you can receive FDIC insurance from many banks with the convenience of holding one account.

Top of page

Who provides the additional FDIC insurance when I place deposits using CDARS?

Banks that issue your CDs using the CDARS service provide access to the additional FDIC insurance coverage – each below $100,000. Working with just one financial institution, you get coverage from many – and without all of the legwork.

Top of page

Can I withdraw money deposited through CDARS before a CD or CDs mature?

Yes. As with normal CDs, early withdrawals are available. However, you should know that substantial penalties will apply.

Top of page

What documentation will I receive after I open my CDARS CDs?

You will receive a New Account Notice within seven business days of opening your CDARS CDs and statements on a quarterly basis. These will be sent to you directly from Reliance Trust Company.

What should I know about my CDARS CD Maturity Preference?

Your CD Maturity Preference tells us what to do when your CDs mature. If your CD Maturity Preference is automatic resubmission, we will resubmit the principal and any unpaid accrued interest for placement in new CDs, unless you notify us as described below that you do not want us to do so. If we resubmit the funds, they will be placed in new CDs at the interest rate that applies to CD deposits of that amount and term through the AARP Financial Savings Center at the time of resubmission. Once resubmission occurs, there is no "grace period," and any withdrawal before the new maturity date will be subject to applicable early withdrawal penalties.

At least seven days before your CDs mature, we will send you a notice reminding you that the maturity date is approaching. If you wish to change your CD Maturity Preference from automatic resubmission to payout, you must notify Customer Service no later than 5:00 PM Eastern time on the day that is two business days before your CDs mature. This day will normally be Tuesday of the week in which the CDs mature, unless a bank holiday occurs during that week, in which case it may be earlier. By 9:00 AM Eastern time on the Friday before the week in which the CDs mature, you will be able to learn the interest rates for new CDs to be issued the following week by visiting the rates page or calling 866-421-5806.
